This week we look back with Yosh at some winter sports. At the old Arena. Was this the one downtown across from the Portage Credit Union, or the Centennial? Looking at this shot, I suspect it was the Centennial. Interesting. Turns out water freezes in Canada in the winter, and we can skate on it. Check out these champions. Look at all the badges. Was this in the old curling rink beside the Friendship Centre? Let us know if you see or know anything about or anyone in these photos. It’s our history. One Response ED Dillon January 31, 2015 These pictures are taken in the old and cold tin rink situated on the current Glesby center. The first photo looks like a game between the Winnipeg Marroons and the Portage Poplar Point Memorials. The Memorials uniforms were the same as the New York Rangers as former Ranger Brian Hextall was the founder and one of the Captains. The fellow standing behind the net sticks up his hand whena goal is scored. Thank goodness The slapp shot was not yet invented yet. The shute or the door behind the net is in the west end of the old rink and the snow from ice scrapping between periods was shoveled out the shute. All the other photos are taken in the old tin rink a rink that when the temp was -20 outside it was -30 inside.
