This past week marked the beginning of the Winter lights season with the commencement of the Island of Lights show and Winter lights parade. There’s a lot of lights going up all over town so we thought we’d look back at few Christmas decoration photos from the Tashiro Archive. Looking east down Saskatchewan Avenue. There’s the city hall sign and those orange decorations. What’s that beside CIBC. Is that whatever the Elite Theatre turned into? Not sure where this tree is going. It seems they used to have larger trees along the avenue. Looks like the fire hall was in charge of the lights. Or some of them anyway. Look at the old truck behind these guys. Some Christmas carols. Not much snow that year. That’s the old fire hall and not sure… The sign behind the trees is Public Library. Those little trees were all over town on light standards and hydro poles. Decoration for all. Tree at City Hall – Wow! Look at the signs. Style. If you know anyone in, or anything about these photos, leave a comment, and help rebuild the lost history of Portage la Prairie.
